Salient Delivers Under Mock Load

The Salient Incident response system received its first usage in a disaster preparedness incident in Adelaide this month. The incident codenamed "Red Hen", simulated a rail crash and tested the emergency response of the South Australian Ambulance Service, the Metropolitan Fire Service, SA Police and Flinders Medical Centre. The Salient system was used by emergency staff at key points in the disaster management chain to ensure accurate triage of casualties, and ensure that command and control personnel could see the numbers and condition of casualties, and provision resources accordingly.

The Salient system incorporates radiofrequency identification (RFID) tagging of casualties, with a standardised electronic protocol for triage assessment, and wireless networking technologies to provide a complete and accurate overview of patient load for the duration of the incident. Emergency staff at the Command and Control post, the State Emergency Communications Center, Flinders Hospital Emergency Department and Boardroom were able to see the movement of patients in real time via the Salient Central web interface.

Debriefing of the incident was also much simpler to undertake due to the large volume of data captured by Salient, which was succinctly presented via charts and tables.
